Climate Change and the Filipino's Resilience

The Philippines, made up of many islands, is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Filipinos often face serious problems like stronger typhoons, longer droughts, and rising sea levels. To build resilience, it's important to understand what causes these changes. While the country’s location makes it prone to natural disasters like earthquakes and storms, human activities, both local and global, make things worse, affecting people's lives and livelihoods.

The main cause of climate change worldwide is the increasing amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, mainly from burning fossil fuels, industrial activities, and deforestation. Developed countries, which have been industrializing for a long time, are largely responsible for these emissions. However, even though the Philippines contributes very little to global emissions, it suffers greatly from the effects of global warming, including stronger weather events. Locally, things like deforestation, illegal mining, and fast, unplanned urban growth make the land more vulnerable to flooding and other environmental disasters.

These problems lead to many negative impacts for Filipino communities. Stronger typhoons and heavy rains cause flooding, landslides, and damage to homes and farmland. Coastal areas are at risk from rising sea levels and storm surges, which can pollute freshwater and destroy land. Changes in temperature and rainfall also affect farming, making it harder for farmers and fishermen to earn a living and affecting food security. These issues also harm public health, with more diseases caused by insects and heat, as well as economic losses that slow down the country's growth.
